The 3-second hook: how to stop the scroll
Every short-form platform decides your video's fate by early retention. If viewers scroll before the three-second mark, distribution stops — no matter how good the rest is.
What a hook actually is
A hook is a promise plus tension. It tells the viewer what they'll get and leaves a gap they need closed. "I tested the viral pasta hack" is a promise. "I tested the viral pasta hack — and it ruined my pan" adds tension.
Five hook patterns that keep working
- The result-first hook. Show the ending, then explain. "This edit got 2M views. Here's the timeline."
- The mistake hook. "I've been doing X wrong for 3 years."
- The stakes hook. "If your first frame looks like this, you're losing 80% of viewers."
- The contrarian hook. "Everyone tells you to post daily. Don't."
- The visual pattern-break. An unexpected first frame — motion, an odd object, a mid-action start — before a single word lands.
Test it like a scientist
Write 3–5 hook variants for every idea and keep the strongest. When a hook wins, note why — you're building a personal hook library, and that library compounds faster than any single viral video.
